Eliezer of Damascus, before Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah, was the heir of Abraham's house (Gen. 15:2). Abraham had more than 300 servants (Gen. 14:14) but it appears that Eliezer was one of the oldest and most trusted servants of all (Gen. 15:3). No doubt it was Eliezer of Damascus whom Abraham sent on a mission to secure a wife for his son Isaac. He was the oldest servant of his house and ruled over everything he had (Gen. 24:2). The following verses make me think that this old servant was a very wise man. First, he was a man of prayer. "O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day..." (Gen. 24:12). He prayed that God would bless his efforts. Second, he recognized that he needed divine help. Before he left on his journey, Abraham said to him, "The LORD, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you and prosper your way..." (Gen. 24:40). Do you ever thank God for those ministering spirits (Heb. 1:14)? Third, he thanked God for "the way of truth." To Rebekah's kinfolk he testified, "I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth..." (Gen. 24:48). May these same three things give you "Strength for Today." Pray that God will give you success in your endeavors today. Recognize your need for divine help along the way. We never walk alone. Thank God that you are walking in the way of truth (for many will not choose to do so this day). May God bless you to be just half as wise as Abraham's faithful and trusted servant, Eliezer of Damascus.
