In 1935 Clifford and Ruth Bicker were preparing to return to the US. They had been serving as missionaries in Peru with their two young boys. But before they could leave Peru, Clifford was in a car accident that resulted in his death. When Ruth's brother, Oswald Smith, the pastor of People's church in Toronto, heard of the accident he wrote the words to the hymn, "God Understands." Oswald Smith has written over 1200 other hymns, his best known is, "For God so Loved the World." "God Understands" may not be found in many hymn books but has become a special hymn sung at funerals because of the comfort it brings.
